What is a neuropsychological assessment?

The goal of a neuropsychological assessment is to examine a variety of cognitive abilities which are necessary for goal-directed behavior. This includes speed of information processing, attention, memory, language, and executive functions. By testing a range of cognitive abilities and examining patterns of performance in different cognitive areas, neuropsychologists can make inferences about underlying brain function. Neuropsychological testing is an important component of the assessment and treatment of traumatic brain injury, dementia, neurological conditions, and psychiatric disorders. Neuropsychological testing is also an important tool for examining the effects of toxic substances and medical conditions on brain functioning.

At Lotus Wellness, we can determine the presence of mild cognitive impairment, dementia, intellectual delays, learning disabilities, and attention-deficit with or without hyperactivity. These assessments will help determine the effects of depression and anxiety on brain functioning. We can also determine the effects of a stroke (or cerebro-vascular accident), multiple sclerosis, and other neurological diseases. Through these assessments, it is also possible to determine the difference between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia.

These assessments can be conducted with individuals aged 18 years and older.

What is a psychological assessment?

A psychological assessment is a process of testing that uses a combination of techniques to help arrive at some hypotheses about a person and their behavior, personality, and capabilities. Psychological assessment is also referred to as psychological testing, or performing a psychological battery on a person. Psychologists are the only profession that is expertly trained to perform and interpret psychological tests.

A psychological assessment should never be performed in a vacuum. A part of a thorough assessment of an individual is that they also undergo a full medical examination, to rule out the possibilities of a medically related cause for the individual’s symptoms. It’s often helpful to have a medical examination conducted before psychological testing.

Psychologists seek to take the information gathered from an assessment and weave it into a comprehensive and complete picture of the person being tested. Recommendations are based on the complete assessment results and from discussion with peers, family, and others who may shed light on the person’s behavior in different settings. Psychological assessment is never focused on a single test score or number. Every person has a range of competencies that can be evaluated through a number of methods.

Lotus Wellness, we can conduct psychological assessments to determine the presence of a mental disorder (for example, major depressive disorder or anxiety disorders). This can be useful in determining therapeutic goals and to offer an appropriate treatment.

These assessments can be conducted with individuals aged 18 years and older.
